Just wondering what other people do.
for example - We have supervisors that are hiring employees at a part-time position. They are then working them full time for extended periods of times. So these employees are working the hours to recieve benefits (specifically health insurance) but not getting them because they were hired under a classification that does not given them benefits.
So questions -
Do people have a time frame that no matter what classification employees are hired on they start getting benefits -
*Vacation
*Sick
*Health
What are the diffrent classification that people have and how are they defined-
*full-time
*part-time
*temporary
*seasonal

First do not leave out 401(k) and other pension benefits. ERISA says that after so many hours in a year (it may be rolling 12 months, I can't recall) they must be put into those plans.
Second there is a difference between company provided benefits, such as paid time off for vacations, sick leave, holidays and those benefits that are provided by an insurance company.
For the insured benefits your policy will have definitions of eligibility that you must follow.
For the company provided benefits your have the freedom to determine what it takes to qualify for paid time off.
Many companies use a proration practice so that if the person works an average of 30 hours they receive 75% of a full time employees benefit.
Because of the potential legal liabilities of not doing this correctly I would suggest you consult with ERISA counsel on this before you finalize company practice/policy for this group of employees.

At my company only full time associates (defined as working at least 30 hours per week) are given PTO, Paid Holidays, and company supplemented health/dental/prescription insurance, although we do have a plan for part time associates, it is paid for in full by the associate. A full time associate's insurance, if elected, begins the first of the month following 90 days of full time employment, with STD and LTD being added at one year from hire month. 6 months to begin accruing PTO, and the beginning of the quarter following 12 months of service in which an associate, part or full time works at least 1000 hours for 401(k).
