I am looking to hear from people who have implemented wellness programs and what options they offer to employees to complete the biometric screening requirement.

We currently utilize onsite screeners (requiring a minimum number of hours that we cannot meet at certain locations), home testing kits (which get lost in transit, are costly, and at times are not completed correctly by the user which results in insufficient samples), and a physician kit option where the family doctor orders blood work from a lab (Quest, etc.).

Has anyone with a participant population of over 500 utilized any other method?  Has anyone had any success with contracting with a Quest lab or Lab Corps, thus offering only one screening method?  How can we be more efficient in our biometric screening process?

If you have a population of 500, you should definitely be able to contract with a vendor to go onsite.  How many locations do you have?  Approximately how many employee per location do you have?

I recommend that biometric screenings be performed at the office of the employee's physician. It saves time and encourages check-ups and regular examinations which should be part of your workplace wellness program too.

Just because something is part of your workplace wellness program doesn't mean that you have to do all of the work and re-invent the wheel.

Parents take their children to the pediatrician for school exams, sports physicals, and other exams. Work shouldn't be any different.

I can suggest several possiblities depending on how you want to use the information/the purpose of offerning a screening.  No matter how many worksites you have, if your employees are by and large connected to a health care professional, it might be tough to get them to participate in a screening that is offered on-site.  There are times and reasons to encourage participation regardless of their relationship to a HCP, in which case you can use carrots to get them to participate at the level that is needed to work with the providers you usually engage with for screenings.

If you are using the information as part of an incentive program, you can use a medical verification form (signed off on by their HCP) indicating that the screenings were provided on a certain date at their office - this would eliminate the need to have them re-screened at your event on-site (saving you $$)

If you are offering the screenings because you have evidence that they are needed for your workforce (because many do not have or use a HCP on a regular basis), but need a better source or larger numbers at a screening event, what has worked for us in the past includes:
 - hold the screening at a bigger event (like a health fair) that has ample fun & engaging reasons to attend
 - bring the screenings to the workers on-site by using a Visiting Nurse Association in your area - they are often more flexible than a corporate product and less expensive
 - check with your local health department to see what services they offer (or might be willing to provide) - public health is non-profit, and worksite wellness fits right in with their mission...

Good luck!

In response to your inquiry, have you checked out BeniComp Advantage (www.benicompadvantage.com)?

BeniComp has been the national leader in outcomes-based wellness solutions for 10 years. We have done onsight biometric screenings and routinely see employers get 95-98% participation in the screenings. The trick to getting that percentage is adding incentives. Like Ande said in the post above, we agree that incentives should be part of enticing employees to go to a biometric screening; however, I would suggest the easiest and most cost-effective way to offer a biometric screening is to bring the actual screeners onsight at the employers location/locations. This way it's possible to contain the employees in one central area and offer one static screening method with the same vendor conducting screenings and using the same screening equipment for all employees.

To your point regarding home-testing kits, BeniComp would agree. There is no tracking method to ensuring that the employees 1) received the kits, 2) understand how to use the kits, and 3) adequately communicate to the providers what they need to test.

The screening vendor BeniComp uses has the ability to schedule each of the employer's locations on the same day at the same time. For example, all locations would be screened at their place of business on Monday morning between 7-10AM. This way it's possible to get everyone finished in an efficient and controlled manner and the employees do not have to cut into their morning work schedule. As a matter of fact, we frequently schedule screenings as early as 6:00AM for that very reason.

Biometric screenings are not meant to be difficult, which is the reason a group like BeniComp Advantage acts as the third party to the employer--by scheduling the screenings, communicating to the employees instructions around the screening dates and times, coordinating with the contracted phlebotomists, and following through with the receipt of all lab values and processing/mailing personalized results letters to each employee's home. This is our normal procedure.

For our health insurance, we are actually required to take up APE or annual physical exam. if we don't do it, the health insurance will not be activated (something like that, don't know the exact term) but I'm not sure if the insurance company decides on that or our company. anyways, with that physical exam, we have to go to the specified clinic and get all the medical tests they offer. pretty neat actually since they are also available to our dependents.

Daily Q&A

How to Address Flagging Motivation?

How do I increase motivation levels in the department? How do I brand my business unit as an attractive place to work? I have top-notch IT professionals in my business unit who feel they are "children of a lesser God" because they are non-billable resources and do not get plum postings abroad, nor the glamour that goes with them. As a result, their motivation suffers.
