Not so much for employee appreciation "day," but something I plan to implement soon in my new position is a small bulletin board where people can pin small brightly-colored flash cards with "nice jobs" or "thanks for going above and beyond" near our busy back door. It's something small and simple that any employee can participate in. I saw it at another location and thought it was a nice little way to recognize each other.

In my company we have a way to offer thanks to a person more formally than just a verbal thanks, but it's private and the receiver only sees it through their e-mail - it doesn't seem as genuine, and I believe public recognition is much more meaningful.

No plans.  What is this?  Another manufactured "Hallmark" holiday?

Pretty much, like secretary's day. IMO, if you need a "day" to show your employees you appreciate them, you aren't doing it right. It should be year-round if you want trust and respect.

Agree.  I would also submit that every payday is an employee appreciation day as well as any holiday parties, summer employee picnics, etc.

We have an employee appreciation week. We have daily contests, games, bag toss tournament, random drawings for small gifts each day and a snack each day. We solicit donations for the gifts and snacks from our insurance broker, insurance carriers and our main manufacturing suppliers. The week ends with our company picnic at 1:00 on Friday. Employees really like it and we have an employee committee that comes up with the ideas for each year's events. We did Minute To Win It games at the picnic this year and they were really funny.
