Hi all,
As someone who most often hires entry level, unskilled personnel I would like to address some standards and expectations for new employees that are NOT skill-specific in our orientation. For instance, I notice many new employees do not know how important it is that they are prompt, not excessively absent, able to follow directions, etc. Please share any other general concerns you have with new employees that are not specific task training.
Thank you!

Our entry level employees are in a service environment, so interaction with customers is a huge issue -- eye contact, recognizing them even if you are with another customer, how to answer the phone, when to contact management, etc.
Another big one for us is not leaving their position unattended and paying attention to their surroundings.
Not sure whether you would consider those skills-specific or not. To me, they are or should be common sense, but I am finding a major lacking of that in today's workers.

I generally work backwards on this sort of thing. I make a list of the traits or concerns I would have with a candidate for this position and then draft questions to probe those areas. These are usually your standard "Tell me about a time when..." or "What would you do if...." sort to questions. The things I'd be interested in finding out would be how they get along with people, especially managers; do they adapt to change; do they follow rules; how do they react when they disagree with something; are they going to be reliable etc. I'm sure others will be able to add to this list. Good luck
