Hi:  One of our managers has suggested that we modifiy our dress code and let employees wear plain color t-shirts to work.   While I have some thoughts regarding this proposed change, the issues it raises and the challenges associated with enforcement, I was interested in soliciting others' input.   This is a typical office environment.    Thank you.

Initial thoughts:
1. Who will monitor/censor the messages that may appear on the tee shirts?
2. Is there any possibility clients will interact or see employees in tee shirts?
3. Will you define a tee shirt?
4. Can a tee shirts be "too tight"?
5. Is a bra required?
6. What happens if an employee is feeling offended or sexually harassed by someone's tee shirt?
7. What is a "typical office environment" to you? A lot of cubicles with some offices? Is there a recepitonis that greets the public and can this person be in just a tee?

From a ladies standpoint, I could see some issues on how a "tshirt" is defined since ladies' tshirts come in different neck styles (v neck would be one).

To me, PLAIN tshirts are "undershirts" not acceptable wear, especially if they don't have a message/pattern, etc.   And I dont' think you want to get into t-shirts with messages/patterns!

So I would say they are just too casual for almost any business environment.

Thanx for your opinion and concurrence with my initial thoughts on t-shirts-----too casual for our office environment.

Yep, but not a work picture LOL....  Actually a picture from a family reunion where I was holding up one side of a quilt (hence the tilt)....(yep, I quilt in my spare LOL time).... and am in the process of making a quilt for each sibling and then each niece/nephew...

I wouldn't wear that shirt to work in the office. Although I do tele-commute most days, so I virtually have no dress code!

Most offices allow wearing of jeans on Friday (the casual day of the workweek).  In my opinion, it would be okay for an employee to wear a short or long sleeve plain color or multi-color t-shirt on a Friday.

There are some good questions in regards to this topic. For one, it is mentioned plain Tee Shirts so I think messages, etc. would not be a grey area. Yes, types of Tee shirts would need to be defined as to what would be acceptable. Maybe even a shirt with the company logo works just fine. The bigger question is how do you define the office? Having worked in various offices from the Midwest to the South, the environments do vary. An office that is professional does not necessarily mean they cannot be casual. Professionalism isn't always about the clothes.  The office could be defined by the customer base they serve or the line of business they are in. If they don't see anyone, they should be more relaxed in their dress code. Simply put-they can still complete their tasks and it has been proven to result in greater productivity when one is comfortable. If there is alot of public contact, meetings, etc. then of course a more "professional" appearance is warranted by say management versus the mail room clerk.

Tee shirts - simply they are too casual for a professional office environment and accepting them is too fraught with translation variances regarding acceptable or not.... what is so difficult about expecting a more professional, civilized mode of clothing in a professional environment?  To me a tee shirted office environment just  smacks of more uncivilized demeanor like unbridled cell phone blabbing and general dismissal of common mores - just what this world does not need any more of.
