In Response to Workforce.com Forum Engagement:
Those of you who have been on this Forum board for a while recognize that the number of postings and engagements has  been dropping off over the past 12+ months. There is the possibility that I will be having a conversation with Workforce.Com management about this issue next week. What would be very useful would be to have input from all of you out there that care about the future of this forum. The key issues are: 1. Why do you think the engagement has dropped? 2. If it were your site (which it is) how would go about reinvigorating the site in a way that would address the issues identified in 1 above. Thanks for your efforts on this.

Please note technical issue brought up here as a factor.

The forum engagement has been slowed due to the absence of traffic from search engines to our forum posts. We are working on this now. We expect traffic and participation to all our forum posts to increase significantly over the next few months.

Thank you all for your input!

Hmmmm...did that happen right about the time Workforce Online switched to the new forum format?

Yes Nork4, this happened about the same time Workforce.com switched to the new format.

How about having the board moderators and invigilators taking part in forums themselves and answering queries, etc

These forums, which for several years always had great discussions and were an invaluable resource for HR professionals, are for all practical purposes dead.  There seems to be little interest or no ability on the part of Workforce to re-energize them.

Anyone know of other forums that are currently what these forums used to be?

Nork4, I’ve followed your posts and have appreciated your insight, thoughts, wit and yes, even the occasional snark. You, along with many of the longtime contributors to the forums, provide a valuable resource to your fellow HR practitioners. But I would encourage keep visiting our forums. As a couple posters have suggested, a moderator, or subject expert, could help push the conversation forward and introduce new topics. It is something we here at Workforce are seriously considering. Additionally: 1.      We are adding a new iteration of the forum platform to increase engagement with social sharing buttons. 2.      We are going to increase the amount of exposure in emails.3.      We will continue to increase our forum presence in search engines via SEO.  I know you have many options to interact online with your colleagues. And, there’s certainly no lack of issues to discuss. Thanks for reading and considering my request. And please keep the comments coming.   Sincerely,Rick BellManaging Editor

What are the ways that you guys are doing to reach people? I'm sure that there are a lot of issues out there in the workforce industry that a lot of people would love to talk about. the reason why they are not doing that conversation here is that they don't know about this place and there aren't really that much new topics about the industry here.

O and yeah, the website doesn't really look ok on mobile.... a lot of people are on mobile surfing nowadays, you should have a mobile version for your website.

Rick:

Thank you for the comments.  Nice to know that even the snarks are appreciated!

I agree with you that regular contributors to these forums, notably rruppert, HRPro, Howard7 and David Arnold, are a great resource for the HR community and line managers. They've all been contributing for years and the practical knowledge they provide has been exemplary.

I think at their peak, these forums were truly terrific and I'm speaking specifically of the time when attorneys from Epstein, Becker & Greene were regularly responding to questions on the Legal Forum. I would not be surprised if that one forum added a lot of traffic to the other topic forums.  Unfortunately, there's been a steady decline in traffic to the forums since EB&G and Workforce went separate ways and it seems to have acceleterated since the new format was implemented. Dave Arnold's fairly regular contributions a few years ago did, I think, give a bit of an uptick but as his interest as waned along with the rest of us, so have the number of posts here.

Bottom line here is, I think, that an instantly recognizable credible resource posting regularly (much like EB&G was) would be a much better draw than our regular contributors such as those I mentioned above.  Someone to give the theory and reality; hands-on contributors such as those I mentioned above to give insights into the practical application aspects.

My two cents.

Carl

I've found a decrease of activity on some of the other boards I tend to follow : hr.blr.com, legalworkplace.com, payrolltalk.com and laborlawtalk.com too.  Many of the same responders are on those too.  But none of them have totally died out. Just gotten much slower. I wonder if it is because of the tightening up of the economy and more employees having their workloads increased due to layoffs of others?  I know in the last two years, I have probably  doubled my work load.

But this is an outlet for me that while work-related that I could enjoy when I needed a bit of a break from my own workload and it kept me up-to-date on a lot of HR/workforce issues.

I still think when you moved the link from "forums" on the main page to "networking" that many people that visit the site don't even realize that the forums still exist.

Daily Q&A

How to Address Flagging Motivation?

How do I increase motivation levels in the department? How do I brand my business unit as an attractive place to work? I have top-notch IT professionals in my business unit who feel they are "children of a lesser God" because they are non-billable resources and do not get plum postings abroad, nor the glamour that goes with them. As a result, their motivation suffers.
