Looking for any "tools" you may have used in educating/training supervisors and managers re: how to spot/confront/deal with employees who may be under the influence. Especially helpful would be checklists on what behaviors to observe and document. Please send to sjb1023@aol.com. Thank you.

SJB, I would recommend that you send your supervisors to a seminar that deals specifically with this issue. There are companies and medical facilities that do this. I know of a company just north of Minneapolis / St. Paul, MN that does this for truck drivers, but the training could apply to any business place.

The U.S Department of Health and Human Services, Center for Substance Abuse Prevention puts out a free brochure concerning drugs in the workplace. It contains some of the information you are seeking. The phone number is 1-800-WORKPLACE.

Daily Q&A

How to Address Flagging Motivation?

How do I increase motivation levels in the department? How do I brand my business unit as an attractive place to work? I have top-notch IT professionals in my business unit who feel they are "children of a lesser God" because they are non-billable resources and do not get plum postings abroad, nor the glamour that goes with them. As a result, their motivation suffers.
