Here's teh situation. We are a call center and have a day shift that ends at 4pm and an evening shift that begins at 4:15. The 15 min between makes for an easy transition between the staff and sups (diff staff and sups). We recentlt began hiring FT employees to work 1-9pm. This crosses them over both shift. The problem is that from 4-4:15, they have no work. Until now, they have just assumed they have the 15min paid break and we have done nothing to tell them otherwise. Now the operations mgr is telling me that either thay save their official break time and take it at 4:00 or they come in 15 min earlier to make up the time. Because they were never told this when they were hired, I am expecting some problems from some of them, but they are not maintaining a true 8-hours if we give away that 15 minutes - and it's not fair to the other shifts. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

Do the other shifts only get one 15 minute break a day? If so, I think it fair and logical to explain to this particular shift that since they should only get one break a day that it be the 4pm break. Or you could put the decision back to the employees and give them (as a whole) the offer to either come in 15 minutes earlier and keep the extra break, or take their one break a day at the 4pm time. Hope this helps.
