I was wondering if anyone has decided to restrict people from going out of town (such as the IS group) at the end of the year in case something happens with any of the computer systems. If so how did

Our company's policy is all employees in the I/S department (full time and contractor) must be within 4 hours of the facility during December and January. That is somewhat more stringent for people deemed essential to critical functions.

All managers are aware they must be available for the weekend. We announced to the employees our Y2K plan that identifies key employees who may be required to work the weekend as well. Everyone has been notified of the expectations since the beginning of the year. Everyone is aware of that Y2K is a priority and we are not negotiating this expectation.

In our company (banking) we notified all employees nearly one year ago that no time off would be allowed between 12/15/99 to 1/15/2000 so that we could be available to troubleshoot any issue related to Y2K. We have republished this several times over the course of this year. To help allay any frustration over this decision, we have decided to award two floating holidays: one for employees hired before 6/1/99 to take before 12/15/99; and the other for employees hired before 12/15/99 to take after 1/15/2000. We've also moved our annual company Christmas party to a New Year's Eve gala where employees and there families can come help us celebrate. I hear very little grumbling because we're all making the sacrifice and the company is giving us something nice for the inconvenience.
