Help! I just had a manager tell me that one of his employees came to him earlier this week and told him he can't handle it anymore, and he wasnts a 30 day leave of absence or he's gonna blow. Then this morning 2 of his co-workers went into the manager's office and told him that the employee is making them nervous. They said they also know that he has a "gun collection". We do not have an EAP program. what to do?

Grant the 30-day leave of absence. This employee recognizes that he is nearly out of control. Do not ignore him.
You can't force the employee to get help, but stipulate, as a part of the leave agreement, it is recommended that he receive some counseling before returning to work. Hopefully, your company medical plan will pay for it. When the 30-day leave of absence is over, discuss the outcome of counseling and if he feels ready to work again. Proceed from there.
Incidentally, keep discussions with the employee, his manager, outside therapists who may contact you, and records relating to the employee's mental health confidential.

The answer to your question depends on the laws of your State. Example: Calif. has an illness / injury law that an employer must comply with in regards to this situation(even though many do not know this until after the fact.) Do your company policies allow for "leave of absence?" If you grant this without an investigation first, i.e. what is causing the stress then you are probably setting yourself up, i.e. it could be considered a de facto admission of a workers comp. / job stress case. Depending on your area you might find someone who is in the area who does this type of assessment for a reasonable fee. Pleae make sure before you hire anyone in this regard: EAP, psychologist, psychiatrist, social worker, psychotherapist that they have malpractice insurance and extensive experience / training in this type of assessment. It is not taught in graduate schools as a matter of course. Be glad to give additional info in this regard if you want to contact me.
