Where can I find a comprehensive list of record retention requirements for employers? My company, a sales and marketing firm that operates in almost all 50 states, is in the process of developing a records retention policy. These records would include payroll records, personnel records of terminated employees, OSHA logs, WC files, applications, resumes, etc. Any information regarding this topic would be helpful. Thanks.

The California Chamber of Commerce publishes each year a set of Labor Law Guides (booklet & CD rom) that contains this information from state and federal guidelines. You may also look into BLR as they publish a number of different guides. Check out the net, and check SHRM at www.shrm.org.

Contact information:
BLR (Business & Legal Reports Inc.) 39 Academy St Madison, CT 06443-1513
California Chamber of Commerce 1-800-331-8877

There is also a company, I can't recall the name, that does publish books with all the states requirements. I used this at my last job. It also contained information on termination policies in each state (ie, payout, severance, vacation payout, etc.), insurance regulations and other issues. It was very comprehensive. I'd go to the internet first and conduct searches on other HR sites or try Amazon.com for their available books.

I use a book titled "1999 State By State Guide to Human Resource Law" by Panel Publishers/Aspen Publishers Inc. Their customer service number is 1-800-234-1660. I believe you can have it on a 30 day approval basis so that you can look at it and see if it has what you're looking for. This might be what you're looking for.
