We are a start up medical device co who is growing fast. We have right now a culture where several people control everything. The company can't make a move without these people. This has been supported by the CEO by his lack of action. What I want to know is how to bring this up with senior management without people getting defensive. My thoughts were to have the group give me 10 words they thought described our culture now and then to give me 10 words that would describe the culture they would like. I would like to discuss these 2 lists and hopefully find ways to address the issues that way. I want this to be THEIR discussion rather than something HR is shoving down their throat (you know how it can be perceived sometime). Really interested in some thoughts here!!!

I like your 10 words idea. If your senior management is composed of about 6 or more people, I have a variation on the idea that might be useful. Instead of have each manager work on 2 lists of 10 words, divide the set of managers randomly into 2 subsets. Ask members of one subset to individually generate 10 words for the current culture. Then ask the other subset to individually generate 10 words for the desired culture. By doing it this way, you'll get the following benefits: 1) Each manager will have less "work" to do, and therefore, will be more likely to follow-through on the task. 2) Each manager won't be mentally making comparisons between the 2 lists that would bias their word choices. Your data will have better validity.
