I represent an aviation contract recruitment company based in The UK and we currently have skilled British personnel on placement in The US.
The contract is due to finish at the end of this month and we have the opportunity to transfer them to another company within another state.
Does anyone know whether it is possible to apply for an extension on their existing work visas or do we have to start the process from the beginning.
Thank you for your help.

I'm assuming that your British personnel are here on either an L-1 or an H1-B visa? If the company you wish to transfer them to IS NOT related to your company, that company must apply for a visa for those personnel. Until that visa is approved, the personnel must return to their homeland. Because the job may be different, the salary different and any other aspects of the position different, a new visa would need to be obtained.
If you are related to the company in another state, yes the visa is transferrable as long as it's the same job. We did that with a couple of employees we transferred from California to Florida.
Contact an immigration attorney to assist in the transfer process. It always seems to run smoother when they handle everything. Over the last 15 years I have worked closely with one and it saves me a lot of headache. If you are in the San Diego county/California area, I have a great immigration guy so email me if you are interested. He's also highly recommended by my local HR association.
