I once knew someone who worked at a very old school organization, and each pay day, employees had to pick up their paychecks from the CEO, shake his hand, and thank him.
That may be a bit much, but you could make pay day some sort of open forum day, during which employees can stop by and talk about whatever it is they want to talk about, knowing that you'll be in the office that day.

Since you indicated that "people don't come as often" why not try going to them? Get out of your office and walk through the workplace being sure to hit all areas where people are. Not only does that provide you with better insight into what is actually happening in their work areas so that you can address any issues, ie. safety, cleanliness, ergonomic, etc., but it also lets staff know that you are assessible and that you are there for them. It also shows that you care about them and keeps you in their minds so that when they have issues that need to be dealt with, they will come to you, either physically or on the phone.
Get out and about. I do it all the time and never cease to be amazed at how staff react to one of the "Administration" coming to see them and how they are doing.
