Better recruiting techniques can reduce turnover; improved safety (measured in hrs worked between lost time accidents) can lower worker's compensation costs; benefit costs can be lowered by using cafeteria plans; progressive discipline systems can reduce absenteeism; flexible work plans can reduce absenteeism and improve productivity; improved communication and training can avoid costly lawsuits over a number of issues (sexual harassment, etc.); and it may be profitable to outsource certain functions such as payroll.

I would be interested in hearing from anyone who has tracked HR activities to see how much time is being spent on say employee relations issues, how many complaints received, etc. to name a few.
I would also be interested in knowing what activities others track as well.

Define the functions under the headings that follow - benchmark the avg. time, $$$ and person involved (HR, Mgr,Asst., Owner, outsourced firm cost..) with each of these headings - and then come up with either an annual cost or how many hours are spent X the person completing these tasks avg. compensation per hour....and you will come close to your real-time cost.

To be safe though, cross check your data against the average cost for companies doing this nationally, the statistics of which are all posted on the websites of the SBA - BLS (bureau of labor stat's) - DOL (dept of labor) - and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

You will have an annual road-map with which to track all these costs,it makes budgeting by Dept. easier and keeps the CFO on your side when it comes to increasing these individualized costs compared with their company-wide results.

Benefit/Insurance Management
Employment Administration
Liability Management
Owner/Management Support
Government Compliance/Regulatory Agncy's

This what we have to do for our prospective client companies and it is copyrighted, otherwise I would be happy to share it with you.
