Is there some sort of vague "requirement" that the 3rd be given off? We are open on December 31st, however, we have a floating day this year and employees may use that day for the 31st if they wish.

Thoughts?

We follow the local banking holidays, so a Saturday holiday dictates a Friday closing. We would be open for business on the 3rd.

We also have 10 per year. Since we have hit our limit for 1999, New Year's day would fall on the 3rd. It is in our handbook that we observe that holiday. I think if it stated in your handbook as a holiday observed, you should!

We planned ahead when we made the 1999 holiday schedule. I gave the company the day off on December 31st, but included that day in the 2000 holiday schedule. I figured that way people would still be off on New Year's Eve day and it would count in 2000.

Not aware of any requirement in Massachusetts to give the 3rd off in observance of New year's.

I would also appreciate any info on what percentage of employers are giving July 3 off as a paid holiday. The Survey Group in Massachusetts surveyed its membership in early August, which was too soon for employers to make the determination for the following year.
