With so many people writing books and speaking on the issue of injecting "fun" into the workplace, I must admit, I am wary. I'd like to try some fun, but I am worried it'll flop and the employees will feel like we're treating them like children.

I bet some real nightmares occur in companies that try this without thinking it through. Companies trying to be free and fun like the ones we hear about in Silicon Valley.

Has anyone in our Forum observed efforts to make the office fun?

It depends on how you define "fun" in the workplace. Occasional company sponsored lunches? After-work team sports activities? Golf outings? Or bowling? "Fun" for employees doesn't have to occur in the office, but should include everyone, if possible.

If you want to know what types of activities your employees would find entertaining, ask them. Take a survey and base your attempts at injecting "fun" on their responses.

We are always planning fun things to do at work. We have a committee made up of non-management employees who help come up with ideas and help to pull them off. For instance, we are celebrating Customer Appreciation week next week and will be doing things all week long. It will end on Friday with a "You're a Hot Dog with Us" hot dog lunch in a section of our parking lot. We get the managers involved by asking them to volunteer to put on a skit or the top 10 Customer Service Do's & Don'ts. Getting everyone involved is a sure way of making it fun for everyone! This is but a small part of the fun stuff we do. Halloween is comming up and everyone here is already talking about customes and skits! They want to win the traveling trophy and pizza lunch!

Remember that one person's fun isn't another's.
For example, cookouts at lunch can be fun to many employees, but to some other employees, they may need their lunch time to do errands, make a phone call, etc. Feeling like they have to be at the cookout may even be a negative to them.
If you can, vary the "fun" like you vary your rewards programs.
