I am not now nor have I ever been a fan of probationary periods. I am a fan of introductory employment periods that are aligned with a well planned and supported at-will employment status.

The nice thing about the introductory period is that it is more focused on ensuring success instead of "pass or fail".

Probationary periods are symbols of a bad organizational culture where as an introductory period shows the company is as concerned about the new hires success as the new hire is.

To some it is semantics but words are a big part of how we communicate.
