Urgent: PHR Certification Study Guide Recommendations

I am sitting for the PHR exam Dec 6. I order a study guide through Amazon that was supposed to be published Oct. 1. It still has not been published (Oct. 21). I am considering purchasing a good textbook to help me brush up before the exam & desparately need recommendations. Help!!!!

PHR certification is a waste of time and money. It's equivalent to reading a pamphet on the brain to become a brain surgeon

Perhaps. It will, however, make my company more marketable to have a PHR designated HR Director (we're a PEO).

Try this book -- Human Resource Management
by Mathis, Jackson. It's published by West Publishing.

I beleive that many SHRM groups use it as a study guide.

I have the same book, Human Resources Management, that was provided in the PHR study course I took. It is a pretty good book. I would say that I highly reccommend a study course as well through your local HR Chapter. In the course I took we did a lot of practice questions and exams that really helped.

By the way, I do not agree that the PHR is a waste of time. Taking the exam pushed me to really learn and study statues, regualtions and law. This information has helped me excel in my HR career and given me more self confidence as well as recognition by my employer.

I received my PHR a year ago. Do you belong to SHRM? If so, (if not you should) go to their forum, there is a seperate place for Certification messages. There is a study group that meets online in yahoo. I had the Study Guide, took the course but the most valuable tool for me was the Yahoo study group. I have a box of study guides, sample tests, etc that helped me tremendously received from this group. I was amazing to me the amount of help received from past test takers.

Good Luck, as long as you study, the test was not that difficult and I do feel certifcation is important - I just wished I had taken the SPHR and gotten it over with.

Thank you! I will definitely check out the Yahoo group. I am planning on taking the SPHR in the Spring. It's been a while since I was in school, so I might as well keep on studying while I'm in the groove.
