Would like members' opinions regarding any experience they have had when Facebook posts are the main topic of the employee rumor mill. For example, if someone said "I wish (company name) would burn to the ground with (manager names) trapped inside" -- would you consider that a legitimate threat to the company or to the safety of the individuals named? How would you handle this issue?

If the employee said "I wish [company name] would burn to the ground with [manager names] trapped inside" I would not consider it a direct threat, just bad form. In this case I'd just fire* the employee.
If the employee said "I'm gonna burn [company name] to the ground while [manager names] are trapped inside" I would consider it to be a direct threat. In this case, I'd fire the employee AND call the cops.
*no pun-like-thing intended!

I would ask what does the medium matter? If this was written on the bathroom wall would you take it seriously? Or left on a piece of paper on someone's car?

Probably just a rant, but you CAN require professionalism and appropriate conduct when it relates to the company.
I'd talk to them once and if it happens again (public forum), I'd term.
I'd also make sure the ee's supervisor knows. This person obviously isn't happy and either needs to have a major attitude shift or quickly "helped out the door."

Unfortunately, in this day and age, no one can afford to treat any threat - however vague - lightly. Depending on your company's policies or union contract, you could either discipline employee or fire him, and I would also report it to the authorities. Definitely take it seriously. Even if you're sure employee would never actually do what he threatens to do, this behavior shows that he has a real problem, and what company needs more problems than it already has?
