Just one other note about paying for COBRA. Your accounting/payroll dept would need to see whether this would be considered taxable income to the estate in any year it was provided.

"I don't think I'm setting such a precedent that would bankrupt the company as this employee was young and healthy...i can understand when the employee is more advanced in age and has medical issues... "

You would refuse the same offer to the family of an older employee? Surely you know that's illegal. If you provide it for someone it must be provided for everyone. Think long and hard as to whether you want to set that precedent. In general, paying for the surviving family's COBRA is not done and is not expected. That's what life insurance is for. As much as this is an emotional situation and you want to help (it's only human), you're only required to provide assistance with getting the applicable paperwork done. Definitely bring in your EAP; they can help in lots of ways, including grief counseling. And consider this a good learning tool for how to handle it next time.

ONe thing that we did in the past was offer financial counseling for the spouse of the deseased. We got a certified financial planner to go through their finances (the the spouses approval of course) and chart the best course for their particular situation. We paid for the advisor and made sure there was no conflict of interest on the advisors part.
