Hey everyone. I'm doing some research and am having a tough time finding out specific information. Some key questions I have are:

1. How may actual recruiters and staffing personnel are there in the US? How many in the world?
2. How are they split up? (in-house, freelance, split-fee, etc...)

I've gone to americanstaffing.net but can't seem to locate this information. Anyone that knows this or can lead me in the right direction would be a great help.

Thanks in advance,

Adam

I wish I could help, but honestly I would doubt those numbers exist....mostly because like you said there are so many distinct groups (in-house, recruiting firms and people working on their own). Plus you have groups that just do recruiting for specific industries (execs, drs, etc)

My only thought is to contact some of the larger recruiting associations and ask about their membership #s (but you might get overlap if a recruiter belongs to two associations).

Thanks so much, I've gone that route as well and am still waiting for them to contact me back (if they ever do).

I'll keep digging.

You could try the Bureau of Labor Statistics, they have a link to a Web site that houses job descriptions from there you might find links to industry information.

I don't know about all those numbers but what I am starting to see is a lot of jobs opening up for recruiters. Is this a sign that hiring is about to begin?

There have been a few more recruiting positions opening up recently for sure, but this may just be a "beginning of the new year" hiring spike that will be shortlived.

The first few months of the year always see more hiring activity; ditto for October and November. I wouldn't get overly optimistic about a somewhat higher rate of recruiter openings. If we're still seeing more recruiter positions open in June - September, that would be cause for some cautious optimism.

It's been awhile since I've been to the BOL Web site, the link I was thinking about is called O*Net. They list the number of recruiters in the USA as 197,000 in 2006 with a growth rate between 14 and 20 percent. The BOL table lists the 2008 total as around 217k and projects it to be about 267k by 2018.

Sure there wasn't a (-) sign in front of that projected growth rate? And I'd be willing to be that there aren't 217K recruiters out there right now.

You might also try talking to one of the analysts at Staffing Industry Analysts (www.staffingindustry.com. They're a sister company to Workforce Management and really have their finger on the pulse of the staffing industry--particularly as it pertains to agencies.
