Our company has been purchased and we currently have two Corporate HR offices (I'm a generalist), both with differing priorities and work styles. We have been asked to fill out a Hewitt survey rating our "engagement" with the old company. We have been assured that the survey is confidential, but the rumors are flying. Our paychecks are signed by the new company, our name tags are imprinted with the new company. The company signage will be changing shortly. Is there a logical reason for us to be filling out the survey from the old company? What is the reasoning behind this type of survey? What are the ramifications if we elect not to? Advice is welcome, especially if you work for Hewitt or have experience with them. Thanks.

If I had to guess, I would suspect the new company that tookover your company is trying to get more information on how your HR group was run and to see who is extraneous and who has qualities they need to keep. One of the first places to look in a merger/acquistion is for duplication of duties/knowledge/skills.

And they are using their HR consulting firm(Hewitt) so that they have arm's length away from the information. That way, they can get the information but possibly anonymously. Not saying that they would keep specifics anonymous, but I would ask prior to filling it out.

I don't think anyone dealing with Hewitt will help you out though. Hewitt is just providing a survey service and will probably give recommendations based on their findings. The company/client will make the final decisions.

And honestly, if you refuse to participate in the survey, it would not be illegal for the new employer to terminate you for it.

Generally in merger and acquisitions the company that came out on top (the one that kept the name, signage, etc) is the one who makes the ongoing decisions on who to keep and where.

The survey is being done by the old company. Not sure if that makes a difference.

Had this survey already been contracted for and scheduled prior to the acquisition of your old company? Or was this something that was arranged post-acquisition?

Then choose your actions carefully. There are any number of reasons they might want this survey done. For example, perhaps they want to know if there are people who'll resist the changes, who will embrace them, etc. Or perhaps they're just trying to gauge the employees of the newly acquired company and are trying to determine how best to integrate them into the new company.

But rest assured you won't know exactly what they're looking for.

My recommendation would be to take the survey. No point to positioning yourself as being an obstacle at this early stage.
