For any retailers out there - what is your opinion on anonymous tip lines for employees. This would be to report theft or misconduct. I am against the idea as I feel it would open up a can of worms where employees can carry out vendettas, send us on wild goose chases, etc. I feel employees who will report bad activity don't need a hotline and those that won't, well won't. I get asked the question about once a year from my LP person and continually say "no" but would like to hear other opinions. Thanks.

I agree with you 100%. This will also completely destroy anything resembling teamwork at your company.

What do you think would happen if you took an adverse action against a protected employee based on an anonymous tip?

Hi:
Thousands of U.S. compnaies (Fortune 100 as well as small organizations) use such lines in conjunction with their ethics programs. Of course the information gleaned therefrom needs to be used prudently and circumspectly, but that does not negate the utility thereof. I would suggest that you contact a reputable provider of such services to better evaluate the appropriateness for your organization.

I am not an expert on this - but you may want to check with your internal or external auditors. Ours have 'strongly' advised us to go this way to be in complaince with federal regs - and we are evaluating vendors right now.

I work for a national food processing company (in Canada) and we have a confidential tip line. When it was first implemented we were all expecting a flood of complaints and exaggerated concerns, but that has not happened. It's been running for about a year now and so far there has only been one issue raised at our plant and actually it was legitimate and we were able to resolve an issue that we might not otherwise have heard about. We shouldn't have to be too concerned if we are going about our business in a respectful and professional manner.

I am an HR Director for one of the nation's largest retailers, and we incorporate the anonymous theft "tip" line with the line utilized for anonymous (or named) employee complaints. In 10 years, I have never seen the theft side of the system abused. We receive very few calls on theft but do offer a reward in the event that the case is investigated and an employee is prosecuted.

I think you could figure out which cases were bogus.
I don't agree with your belief that those who will report such incidents will. The research on speaking out at work does not support the likelihood that people are inclined to do this, anonomously or openly.
And the fallout from being a public whistle blower can be worse than your concerns about anonymous tips.
If theft is an issue, this would only be a small part of a solution.

Most state agencies have a "fraud and waste" tip lines. So I would start with your state HR or Compliance agency and see what you and learn from them. In my experience the instances of employees using it to get back at people, etc. are few and easy to identify.
