Lack of Information

I read this site regularly and contribute periodically and I respect the opinions of the regular contributors. I have run into an issue that I may be too close to so thought I would get your comments. I have been in HR for about 30 years, so I'm not new to this, but some things still surprise me. My daughter is doing a job search and received a call this week offering her a position for which she sent in a resume but was never interviewed. The position is in another state and the HR person who called said she had 48 hours to accept or decline the position. The strange part is that the HR person can not/will not provide any specific information about the position including salary, benefits, schedule, responsibilities, etc. and refuses to let her visit the facility before she verbally accepts/declines the job. This is a professional position for a large U.S. government agency. I've told her that if she is interested she should play their game and accept verbally and then she can back out later if the details don't please her. Am I off base with my advice to her? Thanks.

I agree this would be a good way to get more information about the position. Things your daughter should NOT do before she gets more information about the job include travelling overnbight to see the facility, giving out personal information like SS number, and giving this "HR person" any money.

I have a question though - does this "HR person" (quote marks to experess my skepticism that this is an actual HR professional) actually work for the government agency, or is he/she a contractor for the government agency?

It is unusual for a federal agency to not diusclose this information up front. It would even be unusual for a classified federal agency as their are still BI's and related matters for a security clearance that would be involved.

I share hrbth's skepticism and recommend caution.

(if it were me I'd tell them to fuggitaboutit but that's just me)

Have to agree that I would run far, far away. I have never heard of any govt agency that would conduct a job search this way.

Even in just the information that you posted, I see huge red flags. What do you mean they never interviewed her? Not even over the phone? And there is no documentation regarding the job?

Run far away and fast. I suspect a very large scam...

The HR person really does work for the agency as she is reached through the main switchboard, but I did wonder if she was somehow on commission based on candidate acceptances! This lack of information appears to be standard practice for this agency as my daughter now tells me (just got off the phone with her) that she has now been offered a similar position in the local office of the same agency and they didn't have any specifics to share with her either!

Offered by the same HR person? Maybe your daughter should contact someone in senior management at this agency.

Hi:
Offered a job exclusively on the basis of a resume---yeah, that's commonplace!!! Caveat emptor!

Dave Arnold, Ph.D., J.D.

Sorry for the confusion. The second job was offered by a different HR person at a different agency facility, but the M.O. appears to be the same. I would just rather not name the agency by name. I guess for me, never having worked for a government institution, the bottom line is that if this is how at least this agency works it is a sad day for us all. Thanks for all of your comments and I'm glad it wasn't just me that thinks this is strange!

Aren't these jobs listed on the Agency website with paygrades and benefits that are attached?

There are "excepted appointments" to government service which can include recent grads within 2 years of their graduation date. These positions would not be posted.
