We do not have such a policy, but if I had the task you describe, I would start by outlining the worries your company has regarding such things.

Very dependent upon your business. For instance hospitals, medical providers, dentists, emt's etc all have deep policies around the use of sharps, cuts, etc to prevent the spread of blood born pathogens.

Manufacuring environments have policies around the same sorts of things involving injuries at work, specially if there are exposed wounds.

An office environment has a completely different exposure profile. Paper cuts?

If you are wondering about the hiring process, that is a different animal.

Agree it is going to be very dependent on what type of work you do. I suggest speaking with your Workers Compensation broker/insurance agency to see what they have pre-written based on your workers classifications. Often they have at least safety policies that deal with issues such as this.

If you're in the UK (and from your spelling it looks like you are), there are probably specific legal requirements there that your policy must adhere to - and these legal requirements will probably be quite different than what you might find in the US.

If you're in the UK, I recommend you post your question on the UK HR site, www.personneltoday.com.
