We have a high bar established with respect to our customer service expectations.

While I acknowledge that humans are emotional beings, I don't acknowledge that it is acceptable to lower expectations on a regular basis with respect to employees not performing at the required level.

no one is suggesting that anyone lower any bars, I'm saying that human beings are what they are and we can use that knowledge to enhance performance.

All seem to be missing the point here. The EE is upset, grieving, and depressed, you know that. Does the company have access to an Employee Assistance Program? That would be my first "go to". Offer, or send, her to be evaluated and helped by a professional. Stop gap measures are only that and the problem is not cured, but bandaged and festering. Showing a positive interest in an employee's health is a win for all.

Daily Q&A

How to Address Flagging Motivation?

How do I increase motivation levels in the department? How do I brand my business unit as an attractive place to work? I have top-notch IT professionals in my business unit who feel they are "children of a lesser God" because they are non-billable resources and do not get plum postings abroad, nor the glamour that goes with them. As a result, their motivation suffers.
