It seems we have a thief among us here at work. Recently we have had 2 women have money missing out of their purses during the work day.
We have lockers for people but not everyone uses them. People take their purses to their work area and then walk away from them.
What we've done so far is told everyone that money has been missing and to lock their purses up.
Does anyone else have any further suggestions?

We had a local community police officer come by at an All Staff Meeting to discuss "office creepers" (usually around the winter holidays, external folks who walk around looking all official but aren't and steel from purses laying around desks). She explained that we're all responsible for noticing details, and if something/someone looks out of place, for asking!
Just a thought to show staff that you take it seriously, and the local police officer does it as part of their job. And, maybe puts the thief on notice that you're on the lookout for them.

This is something we don't put up with at all after having two laptops stolen with sensitive information on them. We had the last people that were stealing out of the coffee and water funds.

We had a rash of that a couple of years ago. A couple of staff insisted that we reimburse them for their losses. We did not do that and instead took the "lock your valuable up" or leave them locked in your cars, etc.
We asked them to fill out police reports, and in the meantime, one of our staff observed the culprit in the process of stealing her wallet.
The perp was arrested and prosecuted. Was sentenced, then placed on parole. Actual jail time was avoided based on some sort of a plea deal involving restitution, if I recall the outcome correctly.
