Has anyone ever had a supervisor authorize an employee to go to a function for CEU's in their field, not pay for the travel or the CEU class, but allow them to not have to take PTO for the time out? W

Has anyone ever had a supervisor authorize an employee to go to a function for CEU's in their field, not pay for the travel or the CEU class, but allow them to not have to take PTO for the time out? We have a supervisor that just did this and we are all scratching our heads on how to handle. Do the two go hand in hand, if it is work, is it work and the company should pay for the seminar, travel and compensate the employee with paid time for such, OR can you really strike a deal and break it into parts? Hope this makes sense.

Why can't the supervisor do this? Seems like a wise use/expenditure and management of company funds and I would imagine both parties are comfortable with the arrangement.

Unless the course is required by the employer and for the direct benefit of the employer, I actually think this is a good compromise. Nowadays, many employers can't afford to pay for CEUs, travel, expenses etc. And often times travel and expenses plus class costs are much more than the paid day off....And it does encourage employees to keep up CEUs even if they don't directly apply to their everyday job.

Depending on how you look at it, a paid day off to attend is a nice perq to the employee and should gain some points...maybe not as many as a full paid trip, but more than paying nothing and having to use vacation time on top of it.

However, I would want to make sure procedures/policies were in place if this was to be a continuing practice so that it is documented, controlled and audited outside of the manager's approval.

The past two years ALL of our professional development money has been eliminated from the budget (and many other line items as well, but no lay-offs). Many employee's have wanted to continue to attend professional conferences, and have done so on their own dime (although many volunteered to receive waived or reduced registration fees). We are happy they feel it is important to continue, and that they are willing to pay for it. The least we can do is give them the time!

Some would argue that participants should have some "skin in the game" to value the learning experience.
