Our company has recently become more active on Linked In, the professional social networking site. We have a neutral reference policy for supervisors. We have seen more collegues provide recommendations to our employees with the company. Some people that have performance issues are getting recommendations. has anyone seen this happen and how do you all handle that?

I think it's become understood by most LinkedIn users that much of what you see there is untrue, or at the very least, greatly exaggerated. As a result, I wouldn't see this as much of an issue.

Actually I will disagree with hrbth as not only do I have first hand knowledge that references their are generally sound but that the over riding consensus of the site is that these recommendations are but an indicator and require further investigation/due diligence. My first hand knowledge comes from such due diligence.
As to a policy regarding "neutral references". I find that archaic and disruptive to a good relationship between employees and their employer.

Well, I've seen four profiles on LinkedIn of people (HR people!) that I know personally, and their profiles are complete lies (HR people!) - and given that, I think their recommendations must be very suspect at best. When I've railed about this to friends and colleagues, they've all said very cynically "Oh yeah, and we all know that LinkedIn is such a bastion of truth, right." Plus I've read this in several articles.

I've never had any issues with using LinkedIN references or profiles, but I do think it'd be altogether too easy for someone to fabricate references or get someone else to do it for them.
I certainly would not use LinkedIn references as my only reference source.

Therein lies the key Nork. It is a first step. When one considers that candidates supply reference names anyway the use of LinkedIn recommendations is neither unusual nor a bad idea.

Slightly off-topic here, I just need to vent - I'm also very annoyed at the vast numbers of headhunters who are always trying to get me to join their LinkedIn networks just because I'm an HR person. I don't know/have never worked with 99% or more of these people and yet they just keep on barking at my door - four so far today (and that doesn't include the phone calls, faxes and emails) - grrrr. I know this isn't LinkedIn's fault but this misuse of the site is not helping its reputation, not at all.

Definitely agree with you, HRBTH. It seems like as soon as I get off the phone with a recruiter, they send the linked in invitation. My assumption is that other people respond so they figure it's worth a try!
