I have experienced this off and on over the years. I like it and it is a nice place for uninterrupted time. I occasionally have hosted them in my home it as well. That was BD though. (Before Dog)

A lot is going to depend on the company culture. I know companies that would and some that would not.

There is a little more risk/liability to him as a homeowner because of the guests. And I would consider the ease of driving for those coming to the meeting (is it close to the regular office etc).

But I find that often times a change in venue can have a positive effect...especially if it is comfortable and inviting. Now if there is a big 60 lb barking dog or he is a hoarder, that's another issue!

I would support social functions, particularly when attendance is clearly optional. But a meeting, no -- unless transportation to / from the regular office location was also provided. Some employeees rely upon others or public transportation for travel to / from the office.

It's a leadership style and part of an organizational culture. Like anything it could be good or bad.

I once consulted with an organization that was founded by a man whose philosophy was that he would never hire someone he didn't feel comfortable having in his home, all new hires and their families were invited to a dinner party. He and his wife hosted formal and informal gatherings and treated everyone like family. Of course this encouraged some of the same kinds of dysfunction you see in families like rilvary and enabling, but overall they were a very tight-knit team and people looked forward to spending time together.

When he retired, the new CEO tried to do the same thing, but he was not a comfortable host, so gatherings were not fun or productive. They had to find other ways to bond.

Daily Q&A

How to Address Flagging Motivation?

How do I increase motivation levels in the department? How do I brand my business unit as an attractive place to work? I have top-notch IT professionals in my business unit who feel they are "children of a lesser God" because they are non-billable resources and do not get plum postings abroad, nor the glamour that goes with them. As a result, their motivation suffers.
