We have a 20 person office including 6 Outside Sales People. Our office hours are 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM. When outside sales people come to the office for a day (meetings, no appointments, etc.) they come in and leave whenever they like (i.e. arrive at 8:45 AM, leave at 3:45 PM) This is causing resentment among the remaining staff who have to strictly adhere to the normal hours. Any thoughts?

yeah. Tell the other staff that different jobs have different requirements. Then tell them to go back to work.

I would offer them the same opportunity to be outside sales staff with the same compensation package based on closed sales.

Good sales staff are worth their weight in precious metals. There ability to sell your products outweigh others concerns about how many hours they work. It is not the hours you are paying them for but rather their sales. Who cares what their hours are if in one sale they could create a years revenue?

Publish sales graphs showing the gross sales volume this team is producing so that the other staff understand this is where the company revenue comes from.

I agree with HRPro and howard7. In addition, you may face legal issues (in the areas of pay, both base and OT) if you try to set too many limits on/rules around these outside sales reps' working hours.

Sorry, got interrupted.

In addition to the comments above, i would submit that when they're out selling, your reps are working more hours than just the 8 - 5 routine of your office. Your very successful reps are probably working a lot more than 8 - 5.

Thanks everybody. It's always better to head off potential mistakes than try to fix them after the fact. I appreciate your time and expertise.

I agree with the others, there is a lack of appreciation for what everyone brings to the table. These kinds of petty resentments should never be tolerated or pandered to - it only makes things worse.

I faced this situation in a small office with blended sales and administrative staff. Where it made business sense and where I knew the effort wouldn't be wasted, I paired office staff with a salesperson for a long day in field, visiting customers. They came back exhausted and with a more well developed sense of shared empathy. Good luck!

Daily Q&A

How to Address Flagging Motivation?

How do I increase motivation levels in the department? How do I brand my business unit as an attractive place to work? I have top-notch IT professionals in my business unit who feel they are "children of a lesser God" because they are non-billable resources and do not get plum postings abroad, nor the glamour that goes with them. As a result, their motivation suffers.
