The different functions within the organization have demands for different skillsets as well as work time. Office oriented workers tend to have more standard and structured work hours. The sales team tends to have a much more varied work hour structure. Keep in mind that a salesperson may travel a lot and their work hours get spread over a much longer day, and they also can tend to work during the evening hours in their hotel room while out on business. While an office worker with an 8-5 schedule is relaxing at home at 7PM, a sales person may be en route on business travel - or the sales person may be in the middle of a dinner meeting with a customer or prospective customer (still working). Or the sales person may be beginning to do all their business emails for the evening. A broader perspective of the entire organization is needed here.

Cross-training helps people appreciate each other's roles, pairing office workers with sales staff is an excellent suggestion. It might also spark some collaboration and innovation. People work together better when they understand the bigger picture.

Remind the upset employees to consider the weekend and late night work that sales many times engages in. They may be taking a customer or potential customer to a social event, but that doesn't mean it is enjoyable. They may not really like that client personally and would much rather be home with their family. The sales person also has to encounter a lot of unpleasant situations that office personnel do not - such as spending weeks on putting together proposals and presentations only to lose the job to a competitor. Or how about having to listen to the customer yelling at you and having to be sure to act appropriately so as to not lose the account. How about having to be out on the road when it is pouring rain to visit customers when the other employees are inside the nice dry office.

Daily Q&A
How to Address Flagging Motivation?
How do I increase motivation levels in the department? How do I brand my business unit as an attractive place to work? I have top-notch IT professionals in my business unit who feel they are "children of a lesser God" because they are non-billable resources and do not get plum postings abroad, nor the glamour that goes with them. As a result, their motivation suffers.
