Greetings,
I'm working on a story about performance appraisals and their effectiveness and would like to hear your thoughts on the topic.
Perhaps some of you have read Samuel Culbert's 2008 WSJ

To rrupert's comment--Everyone's input is helpful, so thanks for sharing your thoughts.
If anyone knows of companies with an interesting approach to performance reviews, or an approach that's worked especially well for them, please let me know. We've done stories on two companies I plan to talk to: Zappos--where 50% of an employee's performance review is based on how well they embody the company's 10 core values, and American Express.

I suspect the *U* is an emoticon with the asterisks as eyes and the U as a nose?

Or the U could be a very large but quite distorted smile

Sticking your nose in? Isn't that usually followed by "where you don't belong?" I hope not because I don't want to take that the wrong way. It's been a horrendous week so I am a bit on edge.....
*Ã* is a very happy smiley face. If you look closely there are two dots over the U. That's the little itty bitty eyes. The *'s are the smiley cheeks.
With that explanation I am out of here for the weekend! *Ã*

p.s. you can make this sign by doing shift-8, hold down the ALT key and type 0220 and your keypad (numbers across the top don't have the same effect) and then shift-8 again. That gets you those two small dots above the U
