Do you have a lot of retiring distance employees?

What is your definition of "Retire"?

Have they been with you a long time?

Normally in Fed-world 30+ years; we only have two locations with large concentrations of CIO employees (DC and Albuquerque) the rest of us are dispersed out in the field amongst up to 1,400 locations hosted by non-CIO units.

We have a significant number of "Boomers" at or nearing retirement next 5 years, too

I find it to be a myth that Boomers will be retiring in huge numbers at all.

Define "myth"?

It's true that many will opt to stay in the workforce because they are still healthy and interested in working and many will have to work because they are less economically prepared for retirement. But realistically people can't work forever and there are a lot of boomers and the population bubble spans 16 years and boomers only started becoming eligible for retirement in 2010.

Maybe it isn't a "huge" number in your mind, but it will be more than we have ever seen before.

I don't think so. Retirement as most fantasize is a relatively new idea that essentially only lasted from the late 1940's until now. Given life expectancy and the cost associated with living longer you won't see retirement in any significant numbers from baby boomers. It's a myth (or wishful thinking from younger generations who want the jobs the Boomers have)

With regard to handling the "distance" retirees two options come to mind.

1. If the number of retirees at a location is significant (you define) then someone should go to the site perhaps do them quarterly rather than monthly.

2. Though not as much "fun", you could have a "distance" meeting and have one of your executives come on the big screen and thanks folks each quarter for their 30 years of dedicated service.

It doesn't matter what we call it, we will all be leaving the workforce someday and that day comes sooner for boomers than those born after 1964 and it's a big population bubble. Maybe boomers won't be retiring enmass, but there are a lot of us circling the drain.

Well eventually we all leave the workplace, either under our own power or carried out thedoor on a gurney.

But I don't know any boomers who consider themselves "circling the drain" and the many that I know, myself included, have no intention of even getting close to that drain. You can call us the gurney group if it works for you.

Daily Q&A

How to Address Flagging Motivation?

How do I increase motivation levels in the department? How do I brand my business unit as an attractive place to work? I have top-notch IT professionals in my business unit who feel they are "children of a lesser God" because they are non-billable resources and do not get plum postings abroad, nor the glamour that goes with them. As a result, their motivation suffers.
