Hi,

I am reloating my warehouse to a brand new building where are processes will be a more Lean Culture. I thought of a nba, nfl draft for the warehouse employees which management loves the idea for employee excitement but my problem is my office staff. I think we forget them alot but I want to do something fun and special with them besides food. Any ideas or resources I can go to???

These sound more celebratory or fun events. I don't see the value added or "Team Building" result coming from these. It would help if we understood more about what you are trying to accomplish; what the business issue is and the goal.

Thanks.

I have already came up with an idea for the transition. I have a clear understanding of what I am doing with my workforce and how that relates to value added. My question was regarding activities or resources not opinions on if I am adding value or not. I already know what that is. Thank you for input.

My husband works for an insurance company and was scheduled in for an offsite Professional Development Day yesterday. He and all the other participants thought it was going to be a training day but when they arrived they discovered it was a party day!!! (Yes, a bunch of people yelled surprise! and threw balloons when the participants were allowed into the training room.) There was a comedian (telling insurance jokes), several games (hopscotch with insurance-themed boxes and an insurance quiz), a fantastic lunch, and a speech by a fraud expert who then had everyone break into groups to compete for the best insurance fraud idea (my husband's group came in second, he won a measuring tape and a giant chocolate bar). My husband had a lot of fun and thinks his company's pretty neat for doing this. Maybe not too team building-ish but certainly good for morale.

kimmers723, if I'd seen your response to HRPro before I started typing, I wouldn't have started typing. "Team Building" has a very specific meaning in the business world, and the description you gave of your so-called team building activities didn't meet that definition. HRPro was simply taking the time to point that out. (And I would have if he hadn't.) These forums are for learning; your rudeness is unwarranted.

Sometimes technology brings a different tone than intended. If I came across rude my apologies but I just wanted ideas not a definition or questioning my position. If I did not understand team building concepts I would have asked for assistance. I understand the issues I have and what I am trying to accomplish. I am purely planning and researching.

Kimmers response did not come accross as rude.

The clear solution is not respond to any more of my postings or questions because I cannot control someone's interpretation of my words off a message board. At the end of the day, no one here will loose sleep of this. Take care.

Is there some reason why you can't include the office staff in what you plan for the warehouse staff?

If there is some kind of a divide between the groups, you could include the office staff in the planning of the event for the warehouse so instead of forcing two groups to come together artificially, you could be more deliberate and inclusive and build some bridges.

I didn't think that HRPro was being dismissive by asking about your intentions so we could give you a better reply. Although I may have a broader definition of "team building." I think celebrating new beginnings is a legitimate part of team building, but some organizations turn everything into a party and that can be insulting.

By the way, there is nothing wrong with food, especially when people are hungry!

Daily Q&A

How to Address Flagging Motivation?

How do I increase motivation levels in the department? How do I brand my business unit as an attractive place to work? I have top-notch IT professionals in my business unit who feel they are "children of a lesser God" because they are non-billable resources and do not get plum postings abroad, nor the glamour that goes with them. As a result, their motivation suffers.
