Most are good. Avoid labortimetracker.com, though

I would suggest tying the information into your payroll system also. It could be that the payroll system already has such a program.

And I would avoid the one mentioned above! I haven't heard good things about them!

OK, HRPro. None of them are any good but labortimetracker is the worst of a bad lot.

Second stop:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_time_tracking_software
First stop:
Make sure your time tracking tool does not change the status of employees. (i.e. from exempt to hourly). Especially retroactively.

Yes be skeptical of a Wikipedia article.
Read it as you would any consultants report.
There are a number of things to note in the above link.

There are a lot of products.
Each services a niche in the market.
With so many products it is difficult
to sort them without understanding the
details.

Each has an underlying data base that someone in your IT department must provision, support, backup and maintain.

Some integrate well with existing tools like email, some not so easy.

Some have good reporting features while others just feed a spread sheet that someone must finish.

Licencing can be a small or large expense as well as a long term expense for annual renewal. Licencing may entitle your organization to updates and bug fixes or not.

Platform can prove important. There may be a large cost associated with updating user equipment and more importantly there is a risk of inserting an incompatible service into the list that staff must interact with.
Your IT staff may have upgrade plans that could obsolete a purchase you might plan to make before or shortly after it is made.

Features can prove important. Security, audit trails and tamper proofing of data can be key. A hand written bound day timer or notebook can prove more secure and more reliable in a small organization as can simple time sheet paper logs and a well documented process.

And you may find that one or more of your existing vendors or services have the features you need.

Daily Q&A

How to Address Flagging Motivation?

How do I increase motivation levels in the department? How do I brand my business unit as an attractive place to work? I have top-notch IT professionals in my business unit who feel they are "children of a lesser God" because they are non-billable resources and do not get plum postings abroad, nor the glamour that goes with them. As a result, their motivation suffers.
