I have a hiring committee that wants the applications before the closing date. I feel that they should get them all at the same time and not as they come in. Any thoughts?

I'm now in staffing with the federal government, and no applications are forwarded to selection committees or hiring managers until after the closing date. If you're in the same or a similar environment, I'd recommend following that approach.

In the private sector, there really are no closing dates so they often get 'em as they come in.

Yes I agree with this, but for the people that are requesting the applications before the closing date, why do we not give them.

I have my reason what would be yours?

Unless you can point to something in the practice of early forwarding that would demonstate some kind of disparate selection outcome, I do not see the harm.

Theoretically, the larger the pool, the more likely you are to find the talent you are looking for.

In terms of objectivity, the order in which we recieve information can bias our decisions because we tend to remember the first and last information we receive more than the middle.

But new technology has made these practices less "practical."

Deltac makes a good point, and it does depend on your environment.

I only give resumes after the closing date because that's the mandate - I literally can't forward before the closing date.

In the private sector, I give qualified resumes as I received them because I typically have a lot of positions to fill and the sooner I can fill, the better. If the first resume in the door is the perfect match, I'm not waiting to send it. Besides, if its a great candidate, chances are some other employer/s are going to think so too and I'm not about to lose a great candidate because the resume has been sitting on my desk for a few days.

That's the difference between theory and practice. I believe that we know a good fit when we see it, so why wait?

I think your question illustrates one of the common criticisms of HR â a focus on process and procedure over service and results. Your job is to serve the needs of co-workers, applicants and employees in a hyper competitive business environment. That requires constant flexibility and an ability to adapt to continuous change. If they want applications as they come in, (and there is no ethical or legal concern), give them what they want. Every individual and organization needs structure, but that structure should never be immutable.

I give them when they come in after my review. If they are a qualified candidate we don't want to wait. Like NORK4 said - we could miss a potential candidate by waiting. If you don't have a procedure/policy on this - what would be the reason NOT to give them when they are received if they are qualified? If you get qualified ones a week later and no one has been hired you can always pass those ones on.

Federal realm has rules and regulations that private sector doesn't have, such as veterans preference which is given to qualified veterans. This requires justification for "passing over" a qualified candidate with vet's preference and hiring a non-veteran. HR attempts to ensure federal hiring managers follow regs set out by Congress.

Daily Q&A

How to Address Flagging Motivation?

How do I increase motivation levels in the department? How do I brand my business unit as an attractive place to work? I have top-notch IT professionals in my business unit who feel they are "children of a lesser God" because they are non-billable resources and do not get plum postings abroad, nor the glamour that goes with them. As a result, their motivation suffers.
