This has been a rather interesting week for me. My boss was given a package and his boss pulled me into a meeting before to explain that I will be losing 1/2 of my staff. To make matters worst, I suspect that I am nexted.

So... best to wait for the package and then look for a job? Or, if I begin now, then everyone on my Team will know that I am looking.... I would expect my package to be around 6 months of salary.

I don't know what exactly it is you do or what kind of employment market you're in so it's a little tough to give you any worthwhile advice.  How exactly would your team know that you're looking?  Could you possibly do a confidential job search? Can you count on getting 6 months of severance?

Generally speaking, March through June is a very good time of year to find new employment in a normal economy.  The market is much slower from July through mid-September and then picks up again in October/November before coming to a screeching halt in December and January. Keep in mind that this year's economy is predicted to be a bit off from last year's (not that last year's was all that great).

So I guess my gut instinct would be to tell you to keep your job (and paycheck) as long as possible.  Try to do some confidential job searching/networking in the meanwhile - at the very least, do the job search prep work right now (identify contacts in companies which may be of interest to you, dust off the resume, keep your eyes open for any openings which may be advertised/posted, join networking sites such as LinkedIn).
