I work in a health care facility that contains a medical, dental and behavioral health department.  One our employees found a social security card and knew that it did not belong to an employee, therefore she paged the person on our paging system in order to locate them to give them their card.  My question is, since we are a health care facility, is it a HIPPA violation to announce their name over the intercom?

My initial thoughts is no because patients wouldn't know if we were paging a patient or employee and also, no other information about them was stated, but I would like to know the opinion of others.

Thanks in Advance.

Follow your initial thoughts. This is nowhere close to a violation.

Absolutely not. Names are public knowledge.  I think you're being overly sensitive to privacy rights here.

Well let us start with the correct acronym - HIPAA.  I agree, nowhere close to a violation. The person was most likely pleased to be paged considering you had their soc. sec. card.
