There's been a vigorous discussion on the recruiting site. I'm not a supporter of these tests, and there was an article in the Sunday Washington Post (front page) that identified the concerns the American Psychological Association has with these assessments. Also, you should read "The Cult of Personality," written by one of the former editors of Psychology Today.

Legally, any and all tests you use must be job-related.

You'll probably be marketed by some of the people who read this site as a result of your question. I suggest you ask your corporate counsel for advice if you select a test. Better safe than sorry.....

What are you planning on using these tests for and what do you hope to achieve?

BTW, I'm not marketing these things and am far from a believer in them.

I think you should consult with any company who provide psychometric testing services. They will definitely tell you in more detail and you can get right information. It is a legal matter so you should careful.

Hi:  

A good source of information would be the Association of Test Publishers.   As an aside, the American Psychological Association is a joint developer of the Standards for Educational and Psychological Testing, which specifies how to develop tests in accordance with legal and professional expectations.  Given the Association's joint development of the Standards, it obviously is not anti-testing----it is anti-bad testing, anti-bad interviewing, anti-bad simulations, etc.  Further, strictly from a legal perspective, psychometric tests and other hiring tools do not have to be job-related UNLESS they exhibit disparate impact.   Pragmatically and ethically, an employer should only use hiring tools that work----but an above poster's statement about legal requirements is wrong.  While not being exhaustive with respect to this matter, I would always recommend that an employment lawyer review a psychometric assessment or any other component of the hiring process before being implemented.
