there are two ladies who are employed at kroger. one was head of department and the other was her assistant. what happened was they printed up some tickets to attend a concert but what happened was the department head had a conflict with her bank where she was unable to pay for the tickets at that time. she says that the bank told her it would be approx 4-5 days for her account to fixed. so instead of refunding the tickets, she put them in the safe and counted them as cash intil she could get the money back into her account. keep in mind she did not steal the tickets and she has not been notified previous that this practice was wrong. but she and the assistant has been demoted. the department head has been employed for approx 21yrs and the assistant for 22yrs. they have not had any shortages or any kind of discrepencies since they have been at the company. they are charged with being dishonest. it seems to me that they only made a mistake but on their write up, it says that they were dishonest. Is this really being dishonest or is this really just a mistake that they are being punished for unfairly. they are very loyal employees and have not stolen any money.

In my world that would be theft and they would have been terminated. Others may have a different take on it.

Yep -- it would be considered employee theft and employee(s) would be terminated. They should count themselves very fortunate that they were only demoted.

how would this considered theft if the tickets were not removed from the store. they remained in the safe. i thought that theft was actually removing something from a location without paying for it

I think it is theft. The only way it wouldn't be is if the company agreed to pay for the tickets or if the practice of using company services for personal use was approved. It would have been better to account for the shortage in a more honest way. Suppose the company needed the cash?

Not necessarily. the store realized an expense that was not reimbursed as a result of the actions of these two employees. It would be theft.

Misappropriation of company funds, accounting fraud, theft - whatever you want to call it, it's a termination offense. I agree with the other posters that these two are lucky to still have jobs there.

okay maybe i am misquoting the store never lost any money because the tickets were counted as cash. the tickets never left the safe so that they wouldn't be short. it took the bank longer than anticipated getting the money back into her account. i really think that it was a honest mistake because she says that she only did the procedure that way because she had seen other persons do the same action.

Then we agree to disagree. The employees were lucky. In most environments they would have been terminated

dmoney,

I know you aren't getting the response you had hoped for. In your last post you said, "she says that she only did the procedure that way because she had seen other persons do the same action." This reminds me of what my mom (and most moms) used to say - "if you saw someone jump off a bridge......" well, you know that rest of that quote.
