I'm wondering what other companies do when an employee is displaced (not on a large scale, just a single job elimination) - does the HR department take it upon themselves to find the employee another job or is it the responsibility of the employee? How long do you give the employee to find another position (with or without the help of HR)? Do you offer any kind of severance? Do you follow the same process for union and non-union employees (if you have a union)? Any advice would be appreciated.

"...does the HR department take it upon themselves to find the employee another job or is it the responsibility of the employee?"

The employer may or may not elect to help the employee by providing outplacement services, but it's almost always the responsibility of the employee to find a new job.

Not sure what you mean, but it's up to the employee to find a new job (see above).

Do you offer any kind of severance?

Some companies do, some don't.

Depends on what the CBA specifies for union employees. Typically, companies tend to provide the same for each category; some go beyond what the union contract requires for non-unionized employees.

If you're asking whether the employee should try to find a new job within the company, then no, that's not the employee's responsibility. First HR and management needs to decide whether or not you want the employee to stay within the company, and if yes, then it's HR and management's responsibility to try and find an appropriate position for the displaced employee.

If you can't find a position and have to let the employee go, and you want to provide severance pay, make sure you have the employee sign a release. Your company's employment attorney will assist you with this.

Daily Q&A

How Do We Keep Our Best During Upheaval?

Things are getting scary for us. We recently had to downsize, and since then have lost some of our best people to other jobs. Aside from boosting their pay (which isn't feasible now), what practical steps can we take to keep them from quitting on us?
