If we are taking pictures of employees to publish on our website, do we need to have them sign a release? Is it enough to have a policy covering this, therefore they agree by signing the policy manual

If we are taking pictures of employees to publish on our website, do we need to have them sign a release? Is it enough to have a policy covering this, therefore they agree by signing the policy manual acknowledgment form? Does anyone have an example of such a policy?

I would obtain a release. I would also caution against using employees for this and give my vote to using stock photo's. Employees leave organizations. It can be awkward when your website promotes how great you are and have someone identified as an employee who now works for a competitor.

Agree with HRPro...and will say that out of any group of employees, you will have one or two that will refuse to have their picture taken and put online due to their personal privacy onncerns.

Here's a good blog article about it:
http://thatcreditunionblog.wordpress.com/2008/08/20/using-employee-pictures-and-related-items-without-consent/ It's more about using it for marketing/advertising, but I suspect that the intention behind putting them on the site is marketing/client relations, etc. You would be safe if you got approval first.

Daily Q&A

How Do We Keep Our Best During Upheaval?

Things are getting scary for us. We recently had to downsize, and since then have lost some of our best people to other jobs. Aside from boosting their pay (which isn't feasible now), what practical steps can we take to keep them from quitting on us?
