I was on vacation last week but when I returned, the manager of facilities left me a note stating that on August 31st the f/t houskeeper we have working at our organization reported that $60 was missing from her handbag. The housekeeper said she reported for work on that day at 6:00 a.m with $60 dollars in her handbag (all $20's). About 11:40 she went into her handbag and noticed that the money was missing - she made several attempts to search around the area she had left her bag, but nothing was found. She reported this incident to her supervisor whom in turn advised her to document it (which she did)
My question is: How is something like this handled from an HR prespective? Obviously, she can contact the local authorities (not sure if she did or not) but is there something I as the HR Manager need to do? We will provide her with a more secure place to put her purse, but other than that, is there anything else we need to do?

Where I work we would send a notice to all employees reminding them about securing their valuables and include a message about how we value being able to trust each other. But we would probably remain open to the possibility that the money went missing some other way.
I don't know the legal implications, but when I worked for a small business owner, he did privately reimburse an employee because he felt responsible.

Daily Q&A
How Do We Keep Our Best During Upheaval?
Things are getting scary for us. We recently had to downsize, and since then have lost some of our best people to other jobs. Aside from boosting their pay (which isn't feasible now), what practical steps can we take to keep them from quitting on us?
