In CA a written Notice to Employee as to Change in Relationship must be given immediately to employees of their discharge, layoff, leave of absence, or change in employment status. I have obtained a notice from the chamber of commerce that I've been using for a couple of years. It has all of the instances above as well as due to a Demotion - decrease in work hours and/or wages or Refusal to accept available work. However, I can't determine if the notice must be given if there is a demotion with a change of wage but the employee has not terminated employment due to this. We have recently demoted 2 employees and I need to know if they need this and if they are entitled to UI if they do not quit but sustain a significant loss of wages. I gave it to them just in case but now don't really know if it applies. Can anyone help?

Hi:
I'd simply contact the California Employment Development Department--they should have a definitive answer for you.

Yes, tried that. But due to the number of callers already in the queue, they were not able to take my call and hung up on me. LOL. Good thing we are hiring some of those unemployed folks out there. Maybe that will free up some of the representatives so they can talk to me.

Daily Q&A
How Do We Keep Our Best During Upheaval?
Things are getting scary for us. We recently had to downsize, and since then have lost some of our best people to other jobs. Aside from boosting their pay (which isn't feasible now), what practical steps can we take to keep them from quitting on us?
