Holey list of completely unsubstantiated claims Batman! How does seeing a picture of a co-worker lead someone to want to quit, disengage, or unionize?
I suppose the Fortune 100 folks ask about internal picture policies when they select the best compamnies to work for. And the federal government only audits places that don't post pictures of their employees - I could go on and on...I suppose the ID theft argument may have some merit, but that's a streatch.

Sorry, but I could not resist. Flames welcomed...
"The person filed a lawsuit based on the fact that it was against her religious practices to have their pictures taken." Wonder if this person had trouble at the drivers' license office?
"I can think of no valid reason to do so, especially in such a small company." So any new employee would be easily identified.
"I worked in a hospital where someone refused to have their picture taken for ID purposes and was terminated. The person filed a lawsuit based on the fact that it was against her religious practices to have their pictures taken. The person got lost wages and their job back." Something is missing in this. If the company new or should have known about the person's religeous practice, they should have lost the law suit. If the person never told them, the plaintiff would not have prevailed.
"However, there appears to be no legal recourse even though quite a number of staff are not comfortable with their picture being displayed on our intranet email messaging." What is any person's expectation of privacy in the work place? Surely we can't expect that our 'likenesses' are private? Thanks howard7.
"Given that this practice is creating such discomfort, anatgonism and complaints, I wonder why this hasn't been done?" Probably because it's not cute and the company sees the objections as misguided and uninformed.
"For example, if an employee is being stalked, a photo or phone number makes it easier for the the stalker to locate the victim." If somebody is stalking another employee 'internally,' the company has a bigger issue than posting pictures on an internal email or intranet.
'Small company trying to keep a "family feel" perhaps. Lets applaud their attempt...' THANKS
"IMHO the employees have the right to request and the company MAY have the right to refuse the request. I am not sure (happy to be corrected) that there are specific laws that outlaw the company's right to show the employee's picture in its internal email system." I'm also happy to be corrected, employees have no right to privacy when it comes to the company displaying internal pictures of employees.
"Use the above topics to build a business case for senior mgmt to show potential $$ liability and costs in using the pix. I believe they will pull the pix immediately." The liability is in protecting the employees from harm inside the workplace. No pictures could increase the employer's liability should there be no other immediate process to ID an employee. For example, what if there's an emergency and folks arrive to give medical treatment and the employee has no ID on them and nobody knows who the employee is?
Despite it being a small company, would there be a delay in treatment until the person is IDed? Don't know. But I would want a quick and easy ID process. That's what improved technology has given us. It's not necessary to retrieve a paper file.
I could 'what if' this thing to oblivion. What has happened or what is happenning in our workplaces that give employees pause to just about every employee action we take? Is it that bad out there? I can understand the fringe employees who suspect everything, but what gives?

Daily Q&A
How to Address Flagging Motivation?
How do I increase motivation levels in the department? How do I brand my business unit as an attractive place to work? I have top-notch IT professionals in my business unit who feel they are "children of a lesser God" because they are non-billable resources and do not get plum postings abroad, nor the glamour that goes with them. As a result, their motivation suffers.
