I need urgent advice! My co-worker's (Delesa) daugther was hired as a temporary administrative assistance. She (Xia - daugther) was put under my supervision.
I had my reservations due to the false expectation that being a Delesa's "friend" I will allow some unacceptable situations to be overlooked. I express my concerns to my supervisor early on the designation. Then I express my concerns about Xia's work performance.
As expected, the situation has turned ugly between Delesa, Xia and I. Now, I have the feeling that Delesa is lookg for a way to get me. Unfortunatelly, the HR Manager is her best friend, so I can go and as for advise.
How can I protect myself in case that my co-worker is planning to do something against me?
I hope hearing from somebody soon and before this gets worse.

A few informational questions:
1. How long is this temporary assignment.
2. Do you have work product you can show as poor performance or are there other issues?
3. Prior to this how was your relationship with the HR Manager?
4. What exactly is your role in the company?

1. How long is this temporary assignment.
My supervisor hired Xia for six months. Then he started talking about giving her a full time position. After we discussed the performance issues, he spoke with his supervisor and decided that it wasn't a good idea. That there was a potential for conflict, which is already happening. However, she might stay for three more months.
2. Do you have work product you can show as poor performance or are there other issues?
No in writing. I discussed with my director and assistant director that my director supervise her directly, so that he could validate my observations.
3. Prior to this how was your relationship with the HR Manager?
Only business, but I was applying for the position that she is helding now.
4. What exactly is your role in the company?
I am the administrative coordinator for the office of admissions and I manage a group of five student workers and the temporarly staff.

You are in a losing battle, sometimes it doesn't matter if we are right or wrong, the politics get in the way.
But it seems to me like you should have been discussing performance issues directly with the performer to give her a chance to improve before you brought these concerns up with your supervisor. Are you sure you aren't engaging in some kind of unconscious sabotage?

I am not sure. However, the assistant director noticed the same unprofessional behavior.
My biggest challenge is that my director is not comfortable confronting people, so when issues arise, he doesnât confront them.

So what exactly is the performance issue that you describe as "unprofessional behavior"?

One of my student works told me that "someone" is making him unquotable because that person is saying that he is my favorite and I do not treat everybody equal. He had asked the other student workers how they feel about it, and it seems that it is not the case.
So, it seems that my co-worker and her daughter are looking the way to damage my reputation.
So, I am wondering if what HR should do about having two family members working in the same office and the conflicts that is causing?

Please, keep in mind that Xia's responsibilities are to act as our receptionist and the face of our department and school.
-Taking more than an hour lunch (about 1.5 or 2 hrs).
-Distracting the student workers with constant chatting.
-Dressing unprofessionally.
-Taking directions from her mother, without consulting me.
-Having too many personal phone calls.

Daily Q&A
How to Address Flagging Motivation?
How do I increase motivation levels in the department? How do I brand my business unit as an attractive place to work? I have top-notch IT professionals in my business unit who feel they are "children of a lesser God" because they are non-billable resources and do not get plum postings abroad, nor the glamour that goes with them. As a result, their motivation suffers.
