this is a hard subject matter to prove in the workplace and it happens all the time when it comes to managers and employee relationships. An employee "SARA" on my team was not comtemplating on applying for open position in the dept. However SARA was approached by her Manager to apply for the position. the interviews were completed and final decision was made. the employee "SARA" got the position. several employees are aware that the manager approached SARA about applying for the job. It has not been viewed favorable amongst the employees. Now had SARA not got the job she would have been severly disappointed as she would have assumed she was guaranteed for the job because of the managers encouragement. Some history...SARA and the manager have a close relationship and have been friends outside of work for a long time. And it just happened they ended up in the same dept with each other. What can you do when you see favortism in the workplace?

the directors assistant wanted to apply for the position. The assistant has some experience in the position as she provides coverage in their absence. The assistant asked the director if she felt she would be a good canidate the director told her NO. due to a mistake she made 3 years ago while covering for this position as a back up person. How do you recover from a response like this. the assistance has still remained the back up person and made efforts to ensure she had not made any mistakes. is it fair to hold that over an employee head and against them year after year?

At worst, this is perhaps poor management. If you have concerns about your internal promotion practices, you should contact your HR department.

From this and your other postings, it appears that you are frustrated in your present position. You may want to look outside your present employer for new opportunities.

Daily Q&A

How Do We Keep Our Best During Upheaval?

Things are getting scary for us. We recently had to downsize, and since then have lost some of our best people to other jobs. Aside from boosting their pay (which isn't feasible now), what practical steps can we take to keep them from quitting on us?
