I was always informed that no medical information can be in an employee's personnel file. In my situation, we have employees who are nurses. As a requirement for the position, they must test negative for tuberculosis. Can the TB test results be in their personnel files, since they're required for the job, or do they all have to be in a separate file?

This test is no different than any other pre employment medical requirement for the rest of your staff. What does your personnel file have regarding the pre employment drug screening?

Once passed prior to employment, is there a legal requirement to maintain the test results in case there is an audit? If yes then I would likely treat this like your I-9 reports and keep them all in a separate book/file under lock and key.

HI:  The ADA containes strict rules for handling information obtained through post-offer medical examinations and inquiries, including keeping such information confidential and separate from other personnel records. Hence, TB test results don't belong in the regular personnel file.

I trust this is helpful.

There are a number of occupations that require medical testing.  Regardless of what they are the simple fact remains, medical information does not belong in the personnel file.  If someone is hung up on having such information available then a simple notification in that file that all required checks were successfully completd should suffice.
